TOTAL ENERGIES TO HELP SOUTH AFRICA WITH GAS

Total Energies wants to build an LNG terminal to receive gas in Mozambique, linked by pipeline to South Africa

Total Energies is planning to build an LNG import terminal in Mozambique, which could help South Africa with gas.

The Matola terminal will be able to receive up to 2.5 million tonnes of LNG by the end of 2027, while it will be connected to an existing pipeline to South Africa.

The supply of gas from the fields of local energy company Sasol in Mozambique to South African companies will cease in 2027. Therefore Matola, which will be located near Maputo, will have to replace the outgoing volumes of blue fuel.

The final investment decision on the project is expected to be made in the second quarter of 2025.

Recall that Tota lEnergies is an operator of the Area 1 LNG project in Mozambique, but the project is frozen in 2021 due to unrest in the country. The company is now hoping for the election of a new president of Mozambique: the favorite Daniel Chapo has promised to negotiate with the rebels to bring back foreign investors. All that remains is to resolve the issue with Rwanda, whose troops have entered Mozambique to help quell the unrest, but it is unclear how the two states will now interact.
