RUSSIA AND ALGERIA ARE THE COUNTRIES THAT HAVE MOSTLY INCREASED THEIR SHARE OF GAS SUPPLIES TO THE EU

Russia and Algeria in 2024 became the only countries that managed to significantly increase their share of gas supplies to the European Union, according to RIA Novosti calculations based on Eurostat data.
In the eight months of this year, the European Union has reduced gas imports by 1.7 times, reaching 49.2 billion euros. The main reason for the decline is the deindustrialization of the region: from March 2022 to August 2024, industrial production in the association decreased by 21%.
A decrease in supplies was recorded by all major gas exporters, with the largest drops in Qatar (2.8 times), Britain (2.5 times), Nigeria (2 times), the United States (1.8 times) and Norway (1.7 times).
Exports decreased more slowly in Russia and Algeria – only by 22% and 24%. Thanks to this, the countries managed to significantly increase their share in European imports: Russia's share increased by 4.6 percentage points to 18.3%, Algeria's by 4.9 percentage points to 21.3%.
The remaining suppliers increased their share by less than 1 percentage point. Thus, Peru increased its presence in the EU gas market by 0.9 percentage points, Trinidad and Tobago by 0.7 percentage points, Azerbaijan by 0.65 percentage points, Serbia by 0.55 percentage points.
At the same time, the United States continues to be the main supplier with 22% versus 22.9% the previous year. In the top five, in addition to Algeria and Russia, there are also Norway, whose share rose to 12.5% from 12.3% a year earlier, and the United Kingdom (8.4% versus 12.5% a year ago).
