EUROPE PURCHASED A RECORD AMOUNT OF LNG FROM RUSSIA IN 2024

Europe bought a record amount of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia last year: 17.8 million tonnes, The Guardian newspaper reports, citing analyst Rystad Energy.

“Europe bought a record amount of liquefied natural gas from Russia last year, data shows,” the article reads.

According to Rystad Energy data cited by the newspaper, Russian liquefied natural gas imports to Europe amounted to 17.8 million tonnes in 2024, which is higher than the 15.1 million tonnes in 2023 and 16.4 million tonnes in 2022. "LNG flows are not only growing, they are at record levels," Rystad Energy gas analyst Jan-Eric Fähnrich is quoted in the article.

According to the analyst, Russian gas supplies to Europe via pipelines were almost double that of ship deliveries last year and amounted to 49.5 billion cubic metres.

The agreement on the transit of Russian gas to Europe through Ukrainian territory, concluded in 2019, expired on December 31, 2024. Last year, Gazprom supplied about 15 billion cubic meters of gas via this route, which is 4.5% of total consumption in the EU. Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly stated throughout 2024 that they do not intend to extend the transit agreement.
