Reverting used plastic to liquid oil for recycling is becoming an alternative to the more common mechanical recycling, which does not significantly change the plastic’s structure.

The plant, which Total is inaugurating in Grandpuy near Paris, will be the first industrial plant of its kind in France, the company said.

• Total has begun operating a chemical treatment plant on the site of a former oil refinery, it said in response to questions.

• The pyrolysis plant, built in collaboration with a partner, will be able to process 15,000 tons of waste per year once it reaches full capacity. The biofuel production plant is expected to start up in 2025.

• OMV plans to start up a 16,000-ton unit at its Schwechat refinery near Vienna by the end of the year and plans to ramp up production to bring annual capacity to 200,000 tons, the company said in an email.
